The delivery system determines the equipment

Single-dose pens, multi-dose pens, prefilled syringes and vial-and-syringe products are not operated the same way. Some devices contain an integrated needle; others require a compatible disposable needle or separate syringe.

Identify the exact presentation before following any technique advice.

Use equipment supplied or confirmed for the product

Do not substitute needle or syringe sizes based on a generic recommendation. The dispensing pharmacy should confirm what equipment is appropriate for the prescription and concentration.

Needle dimensions are not a dose

Needle gauge and length describe physical characteristics of the needle. They do not determine the medication amount. Syringe capacity and markings also need to match the written directions.

Use new sterile equipment as directed

Do not reuse a disposable needle or syringe. Reuse can damage the needle, increase contamination risk and make administration less reliable.

Never share pens, needles or syringes

Injection devices must not be shared between people, even when a needle is changed. A multi-dose pen labeled for one patient remains a single-patient device.

Prepare disposal before the first injection

Have an appropriate sharps container within reach before beginning. Used needles, syringes and applicable pen devices should go into the container immediately after use rather than being left on a counter.

Safe sharps containers and disposal

FDA-cleared sharps containers are designed to resist punctures and leaks. When one is not available, local guidance may permit a suitable heavy-duty plastic household container with a secure, puncture-resistant lid.

Keep containers away from children and pets, do not overfill them, and follow community rules for final disposal. Loose sharps should not go into household recycling or be flushed.

Plan ahead for travel

Carry an appropriate portable sharps container, keep medicines labeled and check travel requirements in advance. Do not assume a hotel, airport or temporary accommodation will provide a disposal option.
